WWW Wednesday

Hey, sweet peas!

Guess what! Since tomorrow is a national holiday and I got a bank holiday on Friday, I’m starting my two weeks off early! 🎉🎉🎉 I’m really so happy. After all this Corona thing and all the stress I need some time to relax and to really wind down. But that’s not what we are here for.

We are here for WWW Wednesday, a meme that is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words. The questions are of course:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Shall we begin?

Buckle up, sunshines, because this is gonna be a wild ride. I’m reading so many books at the moment, it’s not even funny anymore.

Winter Magic

36689281. sy475

This, my dear fellow readers, is a collection of shortstories all about winter, snow and ice. Which is why I love it, obviously.
The collection features authors like Emma Carrol, Michelle Harrisson, Piers Torday, Abi Elphinstone (who created this book) and many more. It’s so exiting.

Tilly and the Bookwanderers by Anna James

Technically it was the read for the bookclub in May but I still haven’t finished it. Oops.

Eleven year-old Tilly has lived above her grandparents’ bookshop ever since her mother disappeared shortly after she was born. Like the rest of her family, Tilly loves nothing more than to escape into the pages of her favourite stories. One day Tilly realises that classic children’s characters are appearing in the shop through the magic of `book wandering’ – crossing over from the page into real life. With the help of Anne of Green Gables and Alice in Wonderland. Tilly is determined to solve the mystery of what happened to her mother all those years ago, so she bravely steps into the unknown, unsure of what adventure lies ahead and what dangers she may face.

The Train to Impossible Places by P.G. Bell

Yes, I’m still reading “The Train to Impossible Places”. I think I’m kinda falling into a slump here because I have trouble liking the characters at the moment. Besides Wilmot. I love Wilmot.

Suzy is surprised to find a grumpy troll building a railway through her house – especially when a gigantic steam train crashes into her hallway! This is the Impossible Postal Express, the trusty delivery service of the Union of Impossible Places, and Suzy becomes its newest recruit. And with her cursed first package, an Impossible adventure begins.

The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry

2114086

This is what I’m reading the most at the moment. It’s a fast and funny read and I have many thoughts. I’ve also seen Netflix has made it into a movie, so maybe I will watch that after I’m done with this one. Could be fun.

The Willoughby children—Timothy, twins Barnaby A and Barnaby B, and their sister Jane—are fond all old-fashioned things, but especially old-fashioned adventures. What they aren’t fond of, however, are their parents. Truth be told, their parents aren’t the fondest of them, either, and they’re concocting an evil plan to get rid of their children once and for all!
Both parents and children have plenty of dastardly ideas and tricks up their sleeves. The only thing they don’t have is any idea of what lies between them and a happily-ever-after.

The Demigod Diaries by Rick Riordan

18245562

At the moment I really feel the shortstories, collections and quick reads. Also, all the Rick Riordan. I have to admit I’m not so excited about the TV show but I really have to step up my Demigod game. Especially now that I’m taking part in the Olympic Games Readathon.

Thalia’s, Luke’s, and Annabeth’s adventures before the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series began
A first-person narrative from Percy’s viewpoint as he and Annabeth complete a task given by Hermes regarding his staff which happens a month after the end of The Last Olympian and before Percy went missing in The Lost Hero
A story involving Jason, Leo, and Piper during their time spent at Camp Half-Blood between The Lost Hero and The Mark of Athena. It also includes a short story by Riordan’s son, Haley Riordan, revolving around one of the demigods who fought for Kronos during the Second Titan War and survived the battle in Manhattan.

Okay, since it has been a while since I actually posted a WWW Wednesday, I have, of course, more books to put in this section than usual. Which is nice. Also, I kinda wish it was too much.

The Witches of Willow Cove by Josh Roberts

48648735

My first eArc via Netgalley. I was so proud. Took me a while to finish and write the review but I was proud nonetheless.

It’s not easy being a teenage witch. Seventh grader Abby Shepherd is just getting the hang of it when weird stuff starts happening all around her hometown of Willow Cove. Green slime bubbling to life in science class. Giant snakes slithering around the middle school gym. Her best friend suddenly keeping secrets and telling lies. Things only begin to make sense when a stranger named Miss Winters reveals that Abby isn’t the only young witch in town—and that Willow Cove is home to a secret past that connects them all. Miss Winters, herself a witch, even offers to teach Abby and the others everything she knows about witchcraft. But as Abby learns more about Miss Winters’ past, she begins to suspect her new mentor is keeping secrets of her own. Can Abby trust her, or does Miss Winters have something wicked planned for the young witches of Willow Cove?

Song for a whale by Lynne Kelly

40645658

I was so hyped about this book. I was so impressed. And then disappointed because it declined in the later parts. Still gotta review this book though.

From fixing the class computer to repairing old radios, twelve-year-old Iris is a tech genius. But she’s the only deaf person in her school, so people often treat her like she’s not very smart. If you’ve ever felt like no one was listening to you, then you know how hard that can be. When she learns about Blue 55, a real whale who is unable to speak to other whales, Iris understands how he must feel. Then she has an idea: she should invent a way to “sing” to him! But he’s three thousand miles away. How will she play her song for him?

A Place called Perfect by Helena Duggan

34828626. sy475

A book I really flew through. Still have to review this one as well but I’m already kinda curious how the next book will be.

Who wants to live in a town where everyone has to wear glasses to stop them going blind? And who wants to be neat and tidy and perfectly behaved all the time?
But Violet quickly discovers there’s something weird going on – she keeps hearing noises in the night, her mum is acting strange and her dad has disappeared. When she meets Boy she realizes that her dad is not the only person to have been stolen away…and that the mysterious Watchers are guarding a perfectly creepy secret!

The Demigod Files by Rick Riordan

11318812

Like I said, I needed some Percy Jackson. The shortstories where really fun and a great treat for just inbetween.

In these top-secret files, Rick Riordan, Camp Half-Blood’s senior scribe, gives you an inside look at the world of demigods that NO regular human child is allowed to see. These highly classified archives include three of Percy Jackson’s most perilous adventures, a Spotter’s Guide to Monsters, a Who’s Who in Greek mythology, Percy’s Summer Camp report and much more. So, if you’re armed with this book, you’ll have everything you need to know to keep you alive in your training. Your own adventures have just begun . . .

Camp Half-Blood Confidential by Rick Riordan

30835803

Turns out this is actually set somewhere after the second Trials of Apollo book that I haven’t read yet. 😅 But no problem, I was not really spoiled by anything, it was just some good Camp Half-Blood fun.

In response to an awful camp orientation video created by the god Apollo, Percy Jackson and other residents of Camp Half-Blood answer such questions as “What is this place?” and “Do I get to keep the T-shirt?” Newbies can check out the section on the Divine Cabins, read up on Magical Landmarks, and consult the chapter of Training Arenas. But Camp Half-Blood Confidential explores much more than just the buildings and grounds. It includes info that can only be learned from those who live there. For instance, campers do not always co-exist in peace and harmony. The camp is not run with superior efficiency. Prophecies do not flow forth with great regularity. Sprinkled throughout are stories from heroes who have called Camp Half-Blood home or just passed through on their way to places unknown. Chiron himself introduces the book with a brief history of training based on his millennia of experience. And, of course, there are divine words of wisdom from the god Apollo himself, because . . . well, because the demigod authors would prefer not to be struck down, thank you very much.

People, I’m just really happy, if I can finish some of my current reads till next week. Since I have my theory driving test next Wednesday, I will spend the next days studying, not reading. Man, wish me luck.

What are your WWWs for the week? Read any great books?

  1. You’ve read so much and reading a lot at the same time which I admire. Because I can’t do that. I can only focus on one book. 🙂 🙂

    Goodluck with your test. 💙

  2. So I’m VERY late to the game and just getting into Rick Riordan as a fully grown woman and am having THE BEST TIME! It’s nice to know there’s so much content out there for me to consume!

  3. Winter Magic actually sounds like a fantastic summer read, because I can do with a little more coolness in my life already. xD I didn’t finish Tilly, either. Oops, also? =/ To be fair, I’ve already read June’s book, so I feel like it balances out if I read Tilly this month LOL. Good luck with your test! I’m sure you’ll slay it, like the beast it is. 😉

  4. I’ve read the Willoughbys, and it’s such a hilarious book! I saw the Netflix movie, and it’s good! It is kind of different from the book, but that’s sort of expected! I would definitely recommend it though, if you enjoy the book!

    • I’ve finished it AND watched the movie. The book is shorter than I thought but I really liked it. The movie too. It was cute and I didn’t mind that they changed some stuff. I guess the movie wouldn’t have been too good if they had stayed true to the book too much. I must say, I didn’t care much for movie-Jane but I absolutely loved the Barnaby twins. They were so wonderfully freaky and lovable. <3 What did you think?

      • Yeah, the Jane in the movie wasn’t great, but the Barnaby twins were so great and true to the story! I actually really liked the nanny though. She was so funny! What did you think of her?
